How Yoder Automotive Diagnoses Your Car’s Check Engine Light— And Why It's Different

When your check engine light comes on — or your car is making a sound you've never heard before — the question you're probably asking isn't just what's wrong. It's can I trust this shop to tell me the truth?
That's exactly why we want to pull back the curtain on how we diagnose vehicles at Yoder Automotive. No mystery. No guessing. No upselling you on a problem that doesn't exist. Just a clear, step-by-step process designed to find the actual cause of your car's issue — and give you an honest answer about what it costs to fix it.
Step 1: We Listen to You First
Before we touch a single tool, we talk to you.
You know your car better than anyone. You noticed when the noise started. You know if it only happens when it's cold outside, or only when you're braking on the highway. That information matters — and most shops skip this step entirely.
When you bring your vehicle to Yoder Automotive, we ask you real questions:
When did you first notice the problem?
Does it happen constantly, or only under specific conditions?
Have you had any recent repairs done elsewhere?
Is there a smell, a sound, a feeling — or just a warning light?
This conversation alone can cut diagnostic time in half and keeps us from chasing the wrong problem.
Step 2: Visual Inspection and a 25-Point Check
Next, we put eyes on your vehicle. Every car that comes through our shop gets a visual inspection before we hook up any equipment. We're looking at fluid levels, belts, hoses, visible wiring, exhaust components, tires, and brakes — because sometimes what's causing a warning light is something you can see with your own eyes if you know what to look for.
This is also where our owner Marlin Yoder's background pays off in ways you won't find at a chain shop. Marlin spent years as the front-end mechanic at Hendrick Motorsports, where a missed detail at 200 mph doesn't just cost a race — it ends one. That same level of attention carries directly into how we inspect your car.
Step 3: OBD-II Scan — Reading the Codes the Right Way
If your check engine light is on, we'll connect to your vehicle's OBD-II port and pull the stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). This is the part most shops stop at — they read the code, replace the part the code points to, and hand you a bill.
We don't do that.
A code is a clue, not a diagnosis. For example, a P0420 code (catalytic converter efficiency below threshold) can be caused by a failed catalytic converter — but it can also be caused by a leaking oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or even an engine running too rich. Replace the catalytic converter without checking those other causes, and you'll be back in a week with the same light on.
We use the code as a starting point for a real investigation.
Step 4: Live Data Analysis and Systems Testing
After pulling codes, we dig into live data streams from your vehicle's ECU — that's the onboard computer that monitors everything from fuel trims to coolant temperature to transmission fluid pressure.
We're looking for readings that are outside of normal range, values that conflict with each other, or sensors that are giving inconsistent data. This is where the diagnostic work actually happens, and it requires both the right equipment and a technician who understands what they're looking at.
Depending on what we find, we may also perform:
Fuel system pressure testing — to rule out a weak fuel pump or clogged injectors
Compression testing — if there's any sign of internal engine wear
Leak-down testing — to check for head gasket or valve issues
Electrical circuit testing — for sensors, relays, and wiring faults
Road testing — because some problems only show themselves under real driving conditions
We don't just clear the code and see if the light comes back. That's not diagnosing — that's guessing.
Step 5: We Call You Before We Do Anything
Once we've identified the actual problem, we stop.
We don't start disassembling your engine. We don't order parts. We call you first.
You get a clear explanation of what we found, what it means, and what it costs to fix. We separate what's urgent from what can wait. If there are multiple repair options — say, a repair versus a replacement — we lay out both with honest recommendations about which makes more sense for your situation and your budget.
No surprises. No work without your approval. That's not just good customer service — that's our standard.
Step 6: The Repair, Double-Checked
Once you give the green light, our technicians complete the repair using quality parts, and every job is double-checked before your car leaves our bay. For many repairs, we'll reset the system and run a drive cycle to confirm the fix resolved the root cause — not just the symptom.
Every completed repair is backed by our 12-month/12,000-mile warranty on parts and labor. If something isn't right, we make it right. No questions asked.
What Does a Diagnostic Cost at Yoder Automotive?
Our standard engine diagnostic fee is $120. If you approve the repair based on our findings, that diagnostic fee is waived — it applies toward the cost of your repair.
We think that's fair. We're investing real time and expertise into finding your problem correctly the first time. And if we find it and you decide to get the work done elsewhere, you've still received an honest, professional diagnosis you can take with you.
Common Questions About Car Diagnostics
Why can't you just tell me what's wrong from the check engine code?
Because codes identify systems that are out of range, not the specific component that failed. A trained technician needs to verify the root cause before recommending a repair. Skipping this step leads to misdiagnosis and wasted money.
How long does a diagnostic take?
Most diagnostics are completed within 1–2 hours. Complex issues — like intermittent electrical faults or drivability problems that only occur under specific conditions — may require a road test and additional time. We'll always give you a realistic timeframe upfront.
My light came back on after another shop fixed it. Can you figure out what went wrong?
Yes. This happens more than you'd think. Bring it in and we'll start from scratch with a fresh diagnostic — no assumptions based on what someone else told you.
Do you work on all makes and models?
We service domestic vehicles (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, GMC) and imports (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda) — cars, trucks, and SUVs.
